Apropos of yesterday’s posting, a friend tells me that The American Dialect Society has a sibling: the American Name Society, which every year chooses, you’ve guessed it, the name of the year. And this year’s? Don’t ask! *%?!”*&^£”**, otherwise known as Eyjafjallajökull, the Icelandic volcano.
I can’t say it either!
The American Name Society have several categories on which their members vote. The names that came up in the fictional category this year were: Quinn and Finn, characters in the television series Glee. Apparently both names are becoming popular in the USA as people call their babies after them. Doubtless, it won’t be long before we are hearing them called out on school registers in this country.
