I have just been sent data for a Y5 class at Tyldesley Primary school in Wigan, whose pupils all received Sounds-Write tuition from the beginning of Reception. All twenty-five pupils scored above their chronological ages, the weakest by two months, the next weakest by eight months – in itself a remarkable achievement.
At the top end, four children scored a spelling age of 15 years or above.
On average, the chronological age in the class was 10 years and 2 months. Their average spelling age was 12 years and 10 months.
These are fantastic results. Well done to the teachers and to the school!

We can look forward to more and more of the schools in Wigan coming through with such results over the next few years.
A year 4 teacher in Thanet this year said she has really noticed the difference in the skill level of the children entering her class this year. Yes, you guessed it, they have had linguistic phonices (Sounds-Write)at the very least throughout their infant schooling from Year R. I think 2011 will be a telling year . . . not just because the framework is being scrapped but because of all those children whose schools had the confidence to go against all the advice they were getting in relation to the Literacy Strategy and Framework!

I've just received results from St Thomas Aquinas in Bletchley, Milton Keynes. The results for YR are fantastic and every child but one is up and away – some far, far away. In Y1, out of forty children, not one is behind their chronological age and half of the children are two or more years ahead on the Young's Parallel Spelling test. Y2 and Y3 present a similar picture.
Just shows what you can do if you have an approach that works and you are prepared to teach it properly.
